Cartoon: Google Image Result for http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z205/JekyllnHyde_photos/May%25203rd%25202010/8d9fa68d-171e-4163-bf88-aa9dce69e71.gif

The cartoon "Miss Liberty and Hispanic" by Daryl Cagle deals with the issue of how badly Hispanics are welcomed into the USA and consequently under how bad conditions they have to live there.
The cartoon illustrates a woman on whose bottom is a flat pressed man. Compared to the woman the man is a lot smaller. Furthermore the woman holds a torch in her extended right hand and a tablet in her left hand. Additionally she is wearing a robe and a crown with 9 rays on top of her head. According to the various pictorial elements and the headline of the cartoon the woman probably depicts Miss Liberty. The man on the other hand wears a sombrero on top of his head and a poncho. Therefore it probably shows some guy with Mexican roots. He sticks to the bottom of her feet like a chewing gum and looks like he is in pain. Nevertheless Miss Liberty in this cartoon differs from the actual one. Instead of wearing a crown with 7 rays she wears a crown with 9 rays. A crown is a symbol for something kinglike. A king is responsible for its people thus the people can rely on him. But in this case the crown with its many rays turns to something aggressive and oppressive. Consequently it gives Miss Liberty an evil and aggressive touch. Likewise the crown the facial expression is also different. By virtue of her open nostrils, her grim mouth and her eyes, which point to the Mexican Man, she seems to have an angry attitude towards him. Also the tablet is faced down thus you cannot read the inscription which states the birth date of the Declaration of Independence. In fact it's hold more like a shield thus she can protect herself against the Mexican man. Lastly the whole posture of Miss Liberty differs from the actual one. Especially her extended left leg with the Mexican sticking on bottom. This is similar to the situation of if you have a chewing gum on bottom of your shoes. Then you usually extend your leg thus you can get rid of it. In the same way Miss Liberty tries to get rid of the annoying Mexican.
The cartoonist seeks to draw attention of how badly Hispanics are welcomed into the USA. Therefore he uses Miss Liberty, as part of his cartoon because she is the symbol for freedom and brotherhood at New York Harbor. As a result many immigrants who arrive in the US connect to the Statue of Liberty. Therefore they hope they will start a new life in America where they are welcomed as immigrants in a land of immigration. Instead they are threatened by Miss Liberty and the American people.

Vlt ist "some guy with mexican roots" etwas zu informel.

"The cartoon "Miss Liberty and Hispanic" by Daryl Cagle deals with the issue of how badly Hispanics are welcomed into the USA and consequently under how bad conditions they have to live there."

-"in/under which bad conditions they have to live there" müsste es heißen oder? bin mir auch nich ganz sicher

"The cartoon illustrates a woman on whose bottom is a flat pressed man."

-flat pressed würde ich durch flattened ersetzen

"A king is responsible for its people thus the people can rely on him. "

    - for his people?

"But in this case the crown with its many rays turns to something aggressive and oppressive."

    -into something aggressive?

"Consequently it gives Miss Liberty an evil and aggressive touch."

-give is lahm nimm z.B. to grant = verleihen

"The cartoonist seeks to draw attention of how badly Hispanics are welcomed into the USA."

    - welcomed evtl durch integrated oder immigrated ersetzen?

"As a result many immigrants who arrive in the US connect to the Statue of Liberty."

"to refer"

"Therefore they hope they will start a new life in America where they are welcomed as immigrants in a land of immigration."

    - they hope "to be able" to start a new life würde ich hier verwenden, und wie zuvor für welcomed evtl. accepted?

"The cartoon illustrates a woman on whose bottom is a flat pressed man."
